Q: What is Hayfever?

An allergic reaction to airborne substances such as pollen that get into the nose, sinus, throat - and also the eyes. The name hayfever is misleading because symptoms don't just occur in autumn when hay is gathered and never include fever. Symptoms are similar to those of a heavy cold including runny nose, sneezing and watery, itchy eyes.  Some people are allergic to early tree blossoms, while some get hayfever later in the year from rape or grasses (such as timothy grass).

Q: Is it possible to get rid of hayfever?

If hayfever is homeopathically treated during the winter months, it will lessen in severity each spring and may eventually resolve altogether. The services of a qualified homeopath are highly recommended. Antihistamine preparations do not cure hayfever, they just suppress the symptoms which could return with a vengeance when you stop taking them. There are also reports of side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, itching and other symptoms which, interestingly, are very hayfever-like!

 Q: But what about now?

You don’t need to suffer during the hayfever season or go around feeling like Noddy! One or more of the following can make a difference:

  • Try the HayMax nose balm - a drug free pollen barrier to trap some of the pollen and reduce the severity of itching and sneezing
  • Keep windows closed during the day because pollen and heat get trapped in the house and aggravate your symptoms during the night

  • Try the New Era tissue salt combination 'H' for hayfever
  • Avoid anti-histamines and decongestants as these just suppress the symptoms which return once the medication wears off
  • Quercetin has been shown to reduce the effects of histamine and therefore provide relief from hayfever symptoms

  • Take a good propolis or pollen supplement.  They are great immune boosters as well as providing valuable nutrients
  • Have one or two spoonfuls of local honey daily on its own, in a hot drink of water and lemon, or drizzle over cereal or yoghurt
  • See your homeopath for an individual hayfever treatment, which will provide you with instant relief and will work towards resolving your hayfever altogether - if you don't have a homeopath take a look at our homeopathic chart
